Benefits
When you push yourself to the limit, your brain controls your perception of fatigue. Caffeine acts as a brain stimulant to reduce your perception of effort, allowing you to push yourself a little further.
3-9 mg of caffeine per kilogram of body mass has been shown to affect performance. 5 mg per kilogram of body mass, which for a 70kg person is equivalent to 350 mg, is considered beneficial for endurance performance.
It can take 30-60 minutes after consumption for caffeine levels to peak in your blood, so if you're doing a short-duration event (less than 60 minutes), you should take it beforehand.
If you are participating in a much longer event, such as a marathon, 100-mile race, or a half-Ironman triathlon or longer, you should save your caffeine intake for the last two hours when you are likely to reach your fatigue threshold.
